In its early stages, Genuine Mustard began as a solo project devised by Matthew Huval on July 6, 2020, in Lafayette, Louisiana amid the COVID-19 epidemic. Though he has a background in creating mashups and electronic music amongst friends, Matthew learned basic guitar during high school, leading to a profound interest in singing and folk music. Matthew was captivated by the songwriting process and put together his first release under this alias that same year on July 26 with a self-titled EP, consisting of neo-psychedelic and lo-fi indie pop sounds.Jump forward a few years and the project takes the formation of a trio during the summer of 2023, with members Charlie Novak on drums and Ian Sutherlin on bass guitar joining in. Shantler Ramon joins in on trumpet during springtime 2024 adding a melodic, brass flair to the band. The band now steps into the realm of folk rock/punk with songs exploring themes of power dynamics and their relationships among people, dabbling in the common human tendency of experiencing several different emotions at any given moment.October 20, 2025 is when Genuine Mustard released their first song as a band on our friend's house... vol. 3 <3, a compilation album assembled by Seattle-based DIY indie label Friend's House Records. The band's debut album Afraid and OK is currently in the works, and they're planning to release it this year. Background art by Anna Teer
